Going Long: Getting Distance with Accuracy

by Tom

Golf is a game primarily based upon mechanics. The more attention you pay towards the mechanics of your swing, the greater your likelihood of swinging for distance and accuracy. There are several elements that comprise a great golf swing, but there are 3 helpful hints that you should always keep in mind when you’re addressing the golf ball. The 1 constant in golf is that no matter what you understand or think you understand, if you’d like to improve you’ll want to keep on practicing.

So, tip number one.  Ensure that your stance feels good.  For instance, if you feel like you’re bending over a lot then you most likely are.  Part of your golf swing is a reflection of how you feel when you actually take that swing.  So loosen up, get comfortable with that stance first. Keep the shoulders parallel to the ground along with your hips in line with your shoulders (forming a square).  Choose a comfortable stance, after that begin refining that stance into a strong, accurate swing.

The next thing to consider is where you’re putting the ball in your stance. Every club in your bag has a different angle to the club head. That angle was created to give you the kind of range you expect from that particular club. You will also notice that the club head on your woods is shaped differently than your irons. The club head upon a wood is made to produce much more energy upon impact than an iron which is the reason the additional range you can get from a well struck wood. When the ball isn’t in the right position within your stance, then you don’t gain any benefit from all of the golf club engineering that was just described. Woods require the ball to be forward in your stance to benefit from the energy these clubs generate at impact. Middle irons require the ball to be in the center of your stance so that you can have better control over the accuracy of your shot. Short irons and chipping irons require the ball to be further back in your stance to allow the angle of the club head to better affect the spin of the ball. Put the ball where it needs to be in your stance and you will exercise greater control over the results.

Lastly, it is a good idea to remember that a swing is a pivot type motion where you’re shifting your weight and power from back to front. It isn’t a raising or dropping motion, nor is it a shoulder swinging motion. Your entire body needs to pivot correctly for a swing to lead to great results, so practice pivoting your body on your hips and effectively transferring your weight from back to front to have great results. Never lift your body, and do not allow your shoulders to dip down. It is possible to prevent lifting your body by keeping your eye on your ball. Keeping your focus on the ball throughout your swing pretty much insures that your shoulders will stay down on the ball as they are supposed to.

Practice your swing and include the concepts of weight shift and a smooth pivot to improve distance and accuracy. You shouldn’t approach the golf ball as though you have to strike it very hard to get it go where you want it to go. A smooth and cyclical swinging movement will always produce far more accuracy and range each time.
