Cuboid Syndrome

by Tom

Cuboid syndrome is a problem that develops on the outside of the foot with the joint between the calcaneus bone and the cuboid bone. It is more common in athletes where it is considered and overuse type injury. The cuboid acts as a pulley for the peroneus longus tendon where is changes direction. If the bone is not stable the contraction of the peroneus longus muscle moves the cuboid too much and strains the calcaneocuboid joint, resulting in cuboid syndrome. The first symptoms are just a mild ache on the outside of the foot, but later it becomes more painful. A common and useful treatment for cuboid syndrome is a cuboid manipulation.  The Low dye strapping technique is also used to stabilise the cuboid. Foot orthotics are also considered useful in the longer term for cuboid syndrome.
